Each year, nearly 1,000 people die from injuries caused by bicycle crashes and another hundred thousand are treated in emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries.
Bicycles are associated with more childhood injuries than any other consumer product , except the automobile. Children must be taught to ride defensively and to wear bicycle helmets as many head or brain injuries can be avoided.
IT IS ALSO THE LAW
Cyclists under 18 are required by law to wear an approved bicycle helmet when riding a bike on a roadway or sidewalk. Parents can be charged if they knowingly allow their children to ride without one.
Cyclists should establish a serious attitude toward riding their bikes and observe the following safety tips:
• A bicycle helmet is a necessity, not an accessory. No matter what age you are, wear a helmet and make sure you wear it correctly. It should fit comfortably and snugly, but not too tightly. It should sit on top of your head in a level position. It should not rock forward and back or from side to side. The helmet straps must always be buckled. It can not protect you if it flies off during a crash.
• If your helmet has been damaged, don't use it. Check your children’s helmets on a regular basis for cracks and/or peeling of the outer shell. Small cracks can weaken the shell and the foam can be crushed.
