On any given day, Sydney Road in Brunswick carries thousands of cars to and from Melbourne's north. But yesterday, for just six hours, it carried none.
Instead, four kilometres of the busy shopping strip was closed to all but those on two wheels, and to trams, as Moreland City Council staged its second Cyclovia.
"Australia being so wedded to the car means some people reactwith horror when they find out you can't drive," Cyclovia organiserNicholas Elliot said. "But there's been huge support for this."
Moreland councillor Mark Higginbotham said events such asCyclovia were crucial. "We are going to have to be more reliant onpublic transport and bikes," he said yesterday, calling forcar-free days to be introduced on a monthly or even weeklybasis.
But not everyone agrees. While cafes and bars appeared to bedoing their usual Sunday trade, other businesses said customers hadvanished.
