We came across MANY water mills in the valley.
The water is harnessed in small dams.
A mill is visible on both sides of the photograph. In this instance, a water-race runs from the left of the dam wall to the mill on the left of the photograph.
The water runs over a water-wheel about two metres in diameter.
LOTS of water.
Bamboo 'spouting' directs water onto the shaft of the wheel. The friction on the shaft turning on the frame creates heat. The water cools the hub.
To the left can be seen the shaft on the frame, with the cooling water running over it. There is a lugg protruding from both sides of the shaft. As the shaft turns the luggs lift the HEAVY woden arm in the lower left of the photograph. The heavy wooden arm has a BIG granite rock on the other end. The effect it to lift the granote rock up and down all day.
Inside the mill-house is the large granite rock, that is lifted up and down 24/7.
This granite hammer pounds the bamboo into powder. The powder us used for insense.
When the hammer pounds, the road nearby quivers. The valley was full of these thumping mills.
Not all the mills were operating.
