1948年，Nick Drake出生于缅甸仰光，在伯明翰男孩长大。 少年时期的Nick Drake钻研比波普；暗恋嗓音柔弱的巴西爵士女歌手Astrud Gilberto；喜欢美国黑人民歌手Odetta，对Bob Dylan的那张《回到根源》着迷，甚至他还翻唱了不少他的歌。他像许多同时代的英国青年一样爱布鲁斯；稍有不同的是他还迷恋法国的香颂（Chanson）歌曲，迷恋那种能把真实生活中的苦难和艰辛原原本本地唱出来的本质。不知道从什么时候起，Nick Drake常常彻夜写歌，然后用老式录音机记录下来，稍有不满意就抹去重来。 在Nick Drake20岁的时候，制作人Joe Boyd听了他的磁带，决定与他签约。1969年，他发表了自己的首张专辑《Five Leaves Left》。唱片得到了乐评人的赞赏，然而它的销路却不好。 1970年在Richard Thompson、John Cale等人的帮助之下，Nick Drake录制了一张伟大的作品《Bryter Layte》，但唱片销量依旧很差。 1972年他只带了一把吉他进了录音室，又录制了凄艳绝俗的作品—Pink Moon。 1974年11月25日，Nick Drake被发现死在床上，死前嗑了过量的抗抑郁症药物。房里的唱机还一遍遍放着勃兰登堡协奏曲。身边没有发现遗书。 那年，他26岁。 到了1985年，他生前出版的的3张专辑被公认为是英国民谣摇滚颠峰作品。 1986年，人们整理了一些他未发行的歌，出版了Time of No Reply。一个多么绝妙的名字——“没有回应的时间” 2000年，Nick Drake忽然变得流行了，这个生前对现场演出极度厌恶，即使演出也从来不说话，唱完就走的人，居然因为Volkswagon汽车广告用了他的那首"Pink Moon"而变得流行起来。
